Oni Mountain Kabuki Castle

A castle-dungeon filled with hidden magic & a theatre-themed throne! An eccentric lord of the land has summoned the players to his court, where iron gloves wait behind velvet fists! Can they uncover the secrets behind the theatrics? Or is his depravity known across the land, in need of putting down?

Thoughts

• One might treat the underworld gate as being an alternative entrance to the castle or even an escape from the underworld, if your players have access to the underworld or an Underdark-like region.
• Someone should turn that hanamichi stage-walk into a scene for a bloodbath. A theatre is a stage, after all — why not set it up for violence? I bet an oni wouldn’t turn down a chance for a more flamboyant fight.
• If sneaking around’s your players’ thing, try planting a path for an infiltration through the well. Alternatively, you could use the pentagram north of the throne room as a teleportation circle & warp them in that way.

• Castle Snow: Maybe it’s more mountainous than usual. Or it’s in the far north. Or in winter.
• Castle in Hell: What circle of hell is reserved for performers & actors, again? This guy’s probably the lord of that circle.
• Basement: Comes in 3 variants — with a giant magical ritual blast to force the gate to hell open. Trigger the mechanism & wait a few turns while surviving the onslaught! Or maybe stop the lord from opening a direct gate to Hell.
• Day/Night Variants: Wherever applicable!
